Video of black and white cat and dog
The video was enjoyable to watch because of the cat and dog’s markings and the timing of their interactions. Broken Leg, the cat, is the last foster animal residing with us. The two became friends two weeks ago.
Ellie Mae’s health deteriorates
Ellie-Mae, our beloved cat-dog, was acting strangely. She bypassed her breakfast bowl entirely. Instead, she curled up on the heated couch in the catio, her body seeking warmth and comfort. This was unusual behavior for our companion to refuse a meal.
Earlier that morning, I had moved her cozy bed from its usual spot in the living room to the kitchen. With Thanksgiving dinner preparations underway, I wanted to keep a close eye on her while juggling the cooking and baking. The kitchen was bustling with activity, and I didn’t want her to feel overwhelmed or neglected.
However, Ellie-Mae’s disinterest in food and her preference for the solitude of the catio worried me. Her lethargy and withdrawal were out of character, and I couldn’t help but feel a pang of concern. Was she feeling unwell? Had something upset her?
As I chopped vegetables and stirred pots, my thoughts kept returning to Ellie-Mae. I made a mental note to check in on her periodically throughout the day, offering gentle strokes and reassuring words. I hoped that my love and attention would help her feel safe and secure, even with all the holiday chaos.
Despite my worries, I couldn’t help but smile as I glanced out the window at the catio. Ellie-Mae was nestled comfortably on the heated couch, her eyes closed, and her tiny paws tucked beneath her chest. She looked so peaceful and content at that moment. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for her presence in our lives.
Even with the Thanksgiving dinner preparations and the underlying emotional turbulence, I knew that Ellie-Mae’s well-being was my top priority. I was determined to do everything. My goal was to make sure that our beloved cat-dog felt loved. I wanted her to feel cared for and cherished every day of the year, not just on Thanksgiving.
Ellie Mae passes away
Unlike her first seizure a few months prior, she was incapable of rising or recovering independently. Unfortunately, it was necessary to euthanize her a few days later.
Dr. Janet Alviar of Twilight Paws provided a compassionate in-home euthanasia service for Ellie Mae. Ellie Mae was a 65-pound dog and was nearing 14 years old. Dr. Alviar’s presence during this difficult time made the experience much easier for both Ellie Mae and myself. I am grateful for her kindness and professionalism. A few of the cats joined us with curiosity.
The Cat-Dog spirit lives
Hammond, my such sweet big ham of a kitten, has a daily ritual. He loves playing fetch. It’s just like Ellie Mae used to. The cat-dog had a particular fondness for retrieving frisbees in the river and snow, and plush toys indoors. Ellie Mae’s spirit lives on!

While waiting to be adopted, Broken Leg (The Perks of Being a Foster Cat Parent)a foster, found comfort in the presence of the old dog. Her gaze is reminiscent of Ellie’s, a clear sign that the spirit of the cat-dog bond endures. This heartwarming connection brings hope, even after the loss of a beloved pet. Is Broken Leg going to be a permanent resident? I don’t see why not. Stuff just happens for a reason.

RIP Ellie Mae

My sweet Ellie Mae loved everything we did for over the 12 years we had together. We traveled with and without the cat. She loved the hikes and swimming. Most of all, she loved the cats and me. I am grateful that Ellie Mae’s spirit lives on in Hammond, Broken Leg and the rest of the Herd. Ellie Mae lived a full life! RIP.
