The Great Backyard Truce
The weather has stayed surprisingly mild lately. Usually, at this time of year, we’d be buried in snow. We would be shivering in the cold, but this season is giving us a rare break. Because it’s so mild, half the Herd is still heading out to the backyard in the mornings.
Yet, the real action is at the front of the house. While I enjoy my morning mug of coffee, the rest of the crew is already gathered at the front door. With the main door wide open and the glass storm door securely closed, the cats have a front-row seat to the porch and front yard. They aren’t technically “outside,” but they are perfectly positioned to watch the stars of the show arrive.
The Morning Stakeout
Once the Herd has taken their positions at the glass, I head out to the front porch to set the stage. I leave a scattered offering of roasted, unsalted, shelled peanuts and a few ears of corn on the cob—the ultimate squirrel buffet.
Almost on cue, our three regulars arrive to claim their breakfast. It’s a quiet but intense standoff. The cats are completely focused, watching every movement through the storm door while the squirrels busily grab their peanuts and head for the feeders. It’s the perfect start to the day, and the best entertainment the Herd ask for.
