The Days of Our Feline Lives

This past summer marked a significant milestone for us. It was the first in many years without the joyful chaos of fostering rescue cats.

The house felt a little quieter without the pitter-patter of tiny, new paws. This allowed us to fully appreciate the established rhythm of our own beloved “herd.”

On my blog, Cat, Wine, Love, I even dedicated a new section earlier this year. It’s called “About the Herd” and is featured on the homepage. The goal is to introduce readers to “The Days of Our Feline Lives” cast. This section offers a glimpse into their distinct personalities and daily antics.

What we are doing…

Despite the ongoing challenges of managing my elders’ health, the summer itself was a remarkably peaceful and harmonious one.

We reveled in the simple pleasures of observing our natural surroundings. The gentle hum of our resident bees. The vibrant dance of butterflies flitting through the garden. We even admired the intricate webs spun by industrious spiders.

My feline companions, the herd, seemed equally content. They spent countless hours amusing themselves with the abundance of grasshoppers. These grasshoppers bravely (or foolishly) ventured onto our property. Our yard was transformed into a sprawling, live-action hunting ground.

When they weren’t on the prowl, they engaged in spirited games of chase. Their lithe bodies weaved through the yard in playful pursuit.

They also proved to be excellent company. They often “supervised” me as I started two new projects. These projects included building their elaborate outdoor playground and my very own greenhouse.

My Morning Routine With Cats…in summertime

The mornings still held a special ritual outside in the summer. The back door to Cat Paradise opened. One by one, they would parade out. They did this before even thinking about breakfast.

Their anticipation for our morning adventure was palpable. They’d eagerly gather, their eyes fixed on me as I emerged with my steaming mug of coffee. Wolfie was nestled comfortably in his shoulder bag. I also carried a small tote bag with the coveted Greenies catnip treats, my phone, and a small blanket.

The true highlight for them, of course, was clustering around the outdoor couch. They formed a sea of expectant faces. They waited for the moment I would dispense their favorite Greenies.

These small, consistent moments truly define our summer with the herd. They are a quiet joy, a shared routine, and an abundance of feline affection.

Feline Cast Updates

Kenji:

Unfortunately, her blood glucose rose too high, and she now requires insulin injections twice daily. Kenji’s severe arthritis is being managed with oral medication rather than monthly vet injections. Her recent fructosamine test showed positive results, indicating good blood glucose control. She now joins the Herd outside most mornings.

Harvey:

Since our dog, Ellie Mae passed away last November, Harvey hasn’t been as enthusiastic about walks. I tried to encourage him this spring, but he wasn’t interested. Recently, though, he’s been wanting to go again! This is great news!

Wolfie the Wobbly:

The outdoor living room now features new outdoor padding and carpeting! Wolfie the Wobbly is especially enjoying the comfortable and safe cushioned floor, and the other cats (and I!) are loving it too. I can now walk out there barefoot.

And guest Freddy:

I regularly visit Oma and Freddy. I check Freddy’s ears and brush the mats from his back, after which he enjoys a tube treat. He’s doing well since recently having many teeth extracted.

New Cat Paradise addition

I installed solar-powered lights with automatic dusk sensors, creating a cozy and secure Cat Paradise with consistent, hands-free illumination. The simple installation resulted in a delightful, warm glow each evening.

The response from The Herd has been overwhelmingly positive. They seem to relish the extended hours of visibility. Often, they linger outside longer than before. They explore their illuminated surroundings with curious contentment.

The warm light creates an atmosphere that encourages their playful antics. It offers a sense of comfort during cooler evenings. Witnessing their obvious delight in their newly lit haven brings me immense satisfaction.

The Joy of Cat Paradise

This summer has truly been my ‘Cat Paradise.’ A profound sense of peace settles over me.

It happens when I’m surrounded by their unconditional love and gentle natures. I will always cherish these moments of shared tranquility.

I know that their health and happiness are a reflection of the care and love we share. It’s a joy to witness their vibrant energy and serene contentment.

I am deeply grateful for every purr, every head-butt. I cherish every moment of this idyllic summer with my beloved herd.

Time to fine dine and wine with my fellow felines. Cheers!

Purr-fect timing to reflect on summertime in the garden and prepare for the transition to Autumn. Love to see how thoughtfully you have created such an amazing outdoor and safe space for the Kitties to be able to enjoy nature. I can just picture them on the hunt for grasshoppers!
