Repurpose an old table into a cat-friendly table

It used to be a terrarium with glass on the sides, a hexagon-shaped table with a glass top and a wooden base. I had found it in a garage sale for 5 bucks years ago, and it had sat in the living room for a while before I eventually moved it to other rooms. I had gotten tired of messing with the soil and plants in there, and I wanted to find a new use for the table.

Since I liked the shape of the table, I decided to convert it into a coffee table that would work both for me and the cats and for guests as well.

One thing I didn’t like about the terrarium was the leg. It stood on one 4×4 leg on a platform. I have not seen a cat go by the leg or try to scratch it. I removed the leg and the bottom platform.

The platform had curved sides and pulled them off and used them for a table to hold round posts for sanding. The round posts would lay still without falling off.

One of the glass sides was cracked and took all of the side glasses off baring open another platform. The glass top can be taken out.

Adding a bottom platform

I placed the table on top of the smooth type plywood and drew a line around the bottom of the table before cutting with a circular saw.

Add “scratching post” legs

I cut the two long round posts in half and installed the four round posts.

Placing a comfortable piece for the cats

I set the glass top on the bottom of a carpet piece.
This electric cutter is a great tool for cutting carpets and cardboard.
The table already had two holes so I decided to cut the holes on the carpet piece.

Add a nice look to the bottom platform

I bought a 1 inch edging peel and stick strip to add a finished feature to cover the sides of the plywood.
The cats took to the table immediately.
I had left a round platform on top of the table. It was intended for another project. The cats love it there!
The table is great place for brushing the cats.

The cats like this piece. They rub their faces on the edge. I have to say the coffee table is not finished, but they don’t seem to mind. I will leave the piece for now and figure out what to do next.
